Puncture Repair vs Full Tyre Replacement: Making the Right Call

Not every puncture means a new tyre — but some do. Here's how Bristol's mobile tyre experts decide whether your tyre can be repaired or needs replacing.

When Bristol drivers call us about a flat tyre or a slow puncture, one of the first questions they ask is whether the tyre can be repaired or whether it needs replacing. The honest answer is: it depends on the nature and location of the puncture, and on the overall condition of the tyre. Our technicians assess every tyre carefully before recommending the most cost-effective and safe solution.

A tyre puncture can be repaired if the damage is in the central three-quarters of the tread area, the puncture diameter is no more than 6mm, and the tyre is otherwise in good condition with adequate tread depth. Punctures in the shoulder or sidewall of a tyre cannot be safely repaired and require a full replacement. The same applies to tyres with multiple repairs, significant tread wear, or structural damage from impact.

The repair process involves removing the tyre from the rim, locating the puncture from inside the tyre, cleaning and preparing the area, and applying a mushroom-type plug-patch that seals the inner liner. This is a permanent repair when done correctly, unlike the string plug repairs sometimes used as a temporary fix on the roadside.

Bristol Mobile Tyre Guys carry out puncture repairs as part of our mobile service wherever the tyre condition allows. When a repair is possible, we always recommend it as the most economical option. When a repair is not safe or not appropriate, we will always explain why and provide a fair quote for a replacement tyre. Our goal is always to give you honest, transparent advice rather than to push unnecessary replacements.
